This Better Marketing podcast episode is all about how to build authority online for service providers.
Building Authority Online – From Expert to Thought Leader
Hi, I’m Tracy Heatley, and thank you for tuning in to the Better Marketing podcast, bringing you Marketing Magic in Minutes.
This is the podcast for service-based business owners, including professional services and
solopreneurs, who want to be recognised for what they know, trusted for how they think, and chosen because of the value they bring.
Today, we’re talking about building authority online. Not hype. Not ego. Authority that positions you as the go-to expert in your space.
This episode is especially relevant if you know you’re good at what you do, but you’re not always the one getting noticed, quoted, or contacted.
Let’s get into it.
Your Don’t Need To Be Everywhere To Build Authority Online
Building authority is not about being everywhere. It’s about being known for something. Authority is strategic. It’s about helping people think differently, not just showing them what you know.
True authority is built when your audience understands your point of view, trusts your thinking, and feels confident that you can guide them forward.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people confusing visibility with authority. Posting more does not automatically mean being trusted more. Authority comes from marketing consistency, relevance, and depth.
This is where strategy matters
When I developed my Sporadic Marketing Syndrome™ theory, I wasn’t thinking about PR. I was thinking about solving a problem I kept seeing with service-based business owners. That thinking later led to it being published in an American digital marketing publication. It also opened doors to being featured in Forbes and invited to contribute expert quotes to industry articles.
This isn’t me trying to big myself up. I still have moments where I pinch myself. But it’s a real example of what happens when you clearly position your thinking and stay consistent with it.
Authority creates opportunities
And this matters more now than ever. Google and AI platforms are increasingly prioritising expert-led content. They want clarity, consistency, and credibility. That’s a whole episode in itself, but it’s important you understand that authority isn’t optional anymore.
So how do you start building authority in a way that feels natural and aligned?
- You need to be clear about what you want to be known for.
- You need to share your thinking, not just your services.
- You need to show your experience through stories, examples, and insight.
- You need to speak to a specific audience, not everyone.
This is something I work on extensively within my Strategy Cycle Program. Many clients come in knowing what they do, but not how to articulate why it matters. Once that clarity lands, their confidence changes, and so does how others respond to them.
AI can also play a powerful role here when used properly.
In my one-to-one AI training sessions, I often work with clients purely on positioning and authority. We use tools like ChatGPT to help shape thought leadership content, refine messaging, and ensure their voice stays theirs. The goal is not to sound polished. It’s to sound clear, confident, and credible.
This kind of work can completely change how you show up online.
Remember, all of my podcast episodes are standalone. You can dip in and out depending on what you need right now. That said, the next episode, The Hidden Power of Brand Voice: Sounding Like You, Everywhere, follows on beautifully from this one.
Before I wrap up, here are a few things I want you to take away.
Authority is built through strategic clarity.
Being consistent matters more than being loud.
Your thinking is your differentiator.
Expert positioning opens doors you can’t always predict.
