How To Develop Your Marketing Mind

How To Develop Your Marketing Mind Podcast Transcript

“Hi, I’m Tracy Heatley.  Welcome to this episode of the Be Better With Tracy Heatley Podcast, which is all about your marketing mindset.

I’m an avid believer that our mind is the most powerful part of our us.  What we chose to think is generally what we become. Where our focus goes our energy naturally flows. This became very apparent to me many years ago when I was training with Anthony Robins and then doing my Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) training. Those elements of my training for me personally were to do with personal development and improving communications. Skills that I still utilise to this day, and every day, within my business and when I’m training people in networking to win business.

I truly believe that there is a direct correlation between successful marketing and mindset. Whether it’s a product or service that you’re marketing, an appropriate mindset is crucial. Mindset isn’t just a buzz word that links to mental health and well-being.  It’s so much more than that.  If you ask most highly effective and successful business leaders, I’m certain they would back me up on this.

I remember reading my very first Zig Ziglar book years ago. If you’ve not read any of his books, I suggest you do.  The quality of the content for business owners is outstanding. Zig Ziglar was a sales trainer, motivational speaker, and author. He was a strong advocate that to sell you must use the product of service that you sell. He makes it clear that without doing this, you cannot be at your best. This I wholeheartedly agree with.

I also believe that the same is true of marketing. You must believe in the product or service that you’re marketing to do it justice.  A big part of that is mindset! In an earlier episode I touched on mindset briefly in direct relation to recession proof marketing. I’d like to take it one step further because, I don’t know about you, but I think mindset is always relevant.

Whether you’re marketing planning, writing blog, preparing a press release, doing email marketing, putting your social media together, designing infographics, writing a LinkedIn post, delivering webinar, networking or attending an exhibition, without choosing a strong and positive mindset you’re just not going to get the results that you require.

Because mindset matters – without it, you could be very subconsciously pulling back from your marketing efforts. You could lose that spring in your step that motivates you. Worst case scenario is that you end up focusing so much on what could go wrong that everything starts to go wrong. The thoughts that you select and the things you choose to focus on will ultimately manifest themselves in your life and business. So, why not choose the things your desire to focus on and what could go right?

If you recognise that you need to master your marketing mind, then this will be ideal for you. Perhaps you know that you need to focus on marketing strategy.  Or, you may have your marketing strategy in place, but you’re struggling to fit it all into your busy schedule.  If you can relate to any of this, or there is other element of marketing that you know you ought to be focusing on, then I’ve got some wonderfully effective tips for you.  I’m going give you some top tips on manifesting marketing success!

Make time for marketing, otherwise you will find yourself constantly thinking about what you should have, could have and haven’t done. The impact of this can be so draining that you may physically feel the negative impact. It’s very difficult to maintain a positive marketing mindset when you feel like that.  So, my first suggestion is that you schedule time in your diary and stick to it. Whether it’s for marketing planning or doing some marketing yourself, put it in your calendar and leave it there.  As you get used to scheduling time, you’ll find yourself getting into a routine with your marketing and it will really help keep your mindset strong.

I had an Action Coach, called Paul Limb, for a time and the thing that had the biggest impact on me, and my business was to put everything in my calendar from tasks to going to the gym. Absolutely everything! This really got me thinking about how much time small business owners schedule for marketing. I know I’m making a massive assumption now, but I’ll bet that as you listen this you can totally relate.   I think this is part of the reason why my marketing mentoring retainer clients value the service so much, because without it they perhaps wouldn’t make the time to progress.  Plus, they’re introducing new marketing methods gradually to suit them. This means, that as we work together on regular basis, they’re constantly progressing. Whether you’ve got a marketing mentor like me or you’re working alone, scheduling time for marketing will really help to keep your mind focused, so set that time aside specifically and only for your marketing.

Before you start marketing write down at least five things that you’re grateful for.  This is something that I do daily anyway. It’s up to you whether you want to focus business or personal that make you feel grateful.  No matter what is going on, this will help to reframe your mindset, you’ll notice a change in your physiology, your breathing rate will calm, and your mind will become more open.   Doing this not only gives you a positive perspective, but it also means that as you get cracking with your marketing tasks in hand, whatever they be, you’ll have the right motivated mindset to crack on with it.

For my third tip, I’m going to share with you another daily routine of mine.  This is something that I learned a long time ago, from my all-time favourite business author, Brian Tracy. It’s about writing down your goals but with a twist.  This is one of the most powerful things that you can do to develop a motivated marketing mindset.

You will need a pen and paper for this, because the psychological impact of writing things down, makes it manifest strongly in your mind. That’s really important!

Write down your goals every day. Here’s the twist!  Write down your goals in the present tense as if you’ve already achieved them.  I cannot emphasise enough the enormous benefits this will bring to you and your business.

I have done this for the last twenty years. I use this for my personal and business goals, which you may choose to do. However, what I’d like you to do is to use it specifically for your marketing goals

If one of your marketing goals is to make time for marketing, put it on the list.  So, it will be something like, I spend every Monday afternoon on marketing activities for my business, for example.

If you have a goal to work with a particular marketing professional, put it on your list. That might be, XYZ digital marketing does all the SEO for my business. Or Tracy Heatley is my marketing mentor!

If one of your marketing objectives is to gain market share or be the market leader, then write them down every day. We are gaining another 25% of the market this year Or, We are the market leader!

I have my book planned out ready to write and every day I write on my list, I am a number one bestselling author. Imagine that! It’s not being arrogant to do this.  All it’s doing is unlocking the full potential of your mindset, so that what you want comes to fruition.

Usually, I write my goals down and then I shred the paper. It’s the action of writing them down, not reading them that matters.  However, some time ago, I found a book that had my objectives written down. This was a list I’d written down years earlier. Bearing in mind that I write all my personal goals and all my business goals every day, so there’s quite a lot on my list.  As I read through my list, there was only one goal that I hadn’t achieved yet.  I say yet because it’s still on my list!  But, one day, I’ll have achieved it. Everything else I’d achieved! So, I know how powerful this mindset technique can be. I truly believe that if you do this with your marketing and business desires, it will really help you develop an appropriate marketing mindset and actually achieve your goals.

Give it a try, let me know how you get on! It’s up to you if shred them daily or keep them in a book.  If you decide to shred them, perhaps it will be good to keep your very first list but don’t look at it for year.  Then, in a years’ time, get the list out and review what you’ve achieved for yourself and your business.  I wonder how much of an impact this will have on your marketing! Let’s see!

In summary, as you introduce these new mindset techniques, I’m certain they will help you develop a strong and motivated marketing mindset.

I hope you recognise now that you control your mindset. It’s you who controls your focus.  Therefore, it’s you who can achieve phenomenal results with your business.

There’s actually a new mindset blog on my website, written by Gemma Sanchez, one of the founders of Grow Your Mindset.  Gemma is an expert in mindset, and she kindly wrote a guest blog specifically to do with Mindset and Networking, which may find useful too.

I truly hope that you benefit as much as I have over the years by implementing these easy-to-use techniques as part of your daily routines.
